Love isn't black and white

First of all, thank you all, little internet detectives! The mystery about the reseller/cross-seller/handmade artist seems to be solved.

The winner is Kayla Greenrod!

Good job woman, now write a blog about whatever you like (it can be anything, your favorite pizza, your beloved pet hamster or that time you got shit-faced on your best friend's wedding) & send it to etsyreseller@gmail.com and I will publish asap.

I am not sure why I still dwell on Etsy, only to return disappointed and sad. Maybe it's because of some Treasuries, lovingly created by hard working artists. Or maybe it's because I am just a bit mental.

This was my latest discovery, pointed out to me by a friend. And it is golden.

But this isn't the best part. The best part is when a reseller doesn't have the skill set to identify sarcasm or irony, let alone understand the concept of handmade.

Let me make this very clear:

Selling items that you have purchased via a wholesaler is okay.
Selling items that you have purchased via a wholesaler and labeling them handmade is not okay.

Let's play a game!

So yeah, it was about time for a new blog post. The sun is out, which makes me want to buy a handmade leather backpack. With an "Innovative Side Bottle Pocket".

Since pockets are so innovative, especially the bottle ones, I needed this bag.
But it was a bit expensive ($81,93) and the stench of foul play reeked.

So I decided to broaden my search area & included eBay, just for the hell of it.

I was not disappointed.

I didn't really understand what was going on, so I messaged the seller on Etsy. We had a nice chat, which ended up in a repetitive loop of copy & paste.

After my last message, she copy & pasted again. In the end, I guess she grew kind of tired and sent me a pic of her making the bag:

Which made me more confused. So either this woman is lying, or the eBay seller stole her design.

Anyhoo, I want to play a game. NiceLeatherGoods has a ton of handmade bags & some of them are also showing up on other pages.

Who of you can spot at least one? And can someone explain why the picture says NiceDeal 53, but her Etsy shop has a different name? And who is the eBay seller? Does this person also have an Etsy account?

If you've solved the mystery, leave a comment! I will pick one winner and this person will get a blogpost about their shop/product/pet. Which is a quite a good deal, since this page now has approx. 500 make that 400 visits a day.

Shit Resellers Say - Part 2

I am enjoying this way too much. After the shitstorm on the forums last night, I have awoken fresh and slightly energetic. Untill I opened up my mailbox, which was full of crap.

Here we go!

First up we have Kitty Lee from the lovely "handmade" shop MeBracelet. I sent her this:

Hello,
Are you aware that you are selling the same item that 760 other shops are selling?
Which means this isn't "unique" & "handmade"?
Here are a few:

www.etsy.com/listing/82115472/detailed-bird-and-branch-lariat-necklace

Oh, and here is the Ali Baba link, where you can stock up some more:

Keep it "handmade"!
Love xxx

 I got an instant reply:

Dear friend,
First of all, I am very thankful to you for reminding me "handmade".However, I want to tell you what is my necklaces are handmade by myself .I can send the pictures or video to show you.So I will send a few pictures you.
I hope you understand the details at the same time, then make the conclusion, okay?Thank you.
Sincerely,Kitty

So she is not a reseller, okay? Lol, just kidding.

Next! RoyalGoldGifts is a great seller. I mean, reseller.
Here's an excerpt of the message:

Thank you for reporting me for no reason.

So I guess selling the same item 760 other people are selling is not a good reason?

Last but not least:

There is a whole lot more but I am going to wrap it up now, since I have to pick the seam from my crotch and get myself some cheese crackers if I want to survive the morning.

Brilliant idea!

Okay, so I just got a brilliant idea. And those don't come around often, so I suggest you listen up!

Let's beat resellers at their own game!

Here's what we are going to do!

We are not closing our shops. We are not reporting or flagging shops.

We are going to list some of the reseller items for $0.20, with exactly the same pictures.
Once buyers click on them, they will see the following description:

Hello potential buyer,
This item is not handmade or vintage.
In fact, all the other items from other sellers who sell this article are also not handmade. This item was made by little kids in third world countries. Slave labor. Forced labor.
This item has a lot of guilt & blood on it.
Please support handmade and do not buy this item. Not from here, nor any other shop.
Together we can stop slave labor. Together we can bring Etsy back to true handmade, vintage & supplies!

What do you say? Are you in? If so, I will put a new post up, with more details! Let's do this!

UPDATE: I added two listings, both got about 200 views and both got 1 admirer. Probably a friend :) And my forum thread "Beat them at their own game" also might have helped. I did decide to remove them, since being "fair" towards Etsy might be a better approach. Even if they are not fair with us. If my account closes down, I will not be able to reach other fed up sellers. Which would be a shame.

Bless your heart

Who doesn't love iPhone cases?

But let's be honest; if you think they are handmade, you are an utter retard.

That being stated, let's move on, shall we? Because I have a great post for you today.

So, get shitfaced on cheap sake and follow me to Asia, where pink is holy, gold rhinestone crosses are hot & the glue guns be drippin'.

This Treasury was lovingly created by my friend, who also curated the Diversity Treasury. I love her.

But that's not all. Nope. Not even close.
As our sender-inner remarks: "Some people are truly irony impaired".
Because we haven't gotten to the best bit yet! Watch closely:

I don't know about you, but I died a little on the inside. More sake, please!

Venturing into replica hell

But I'm also still dipping into those women's magazines, and they are making me feel genuinely bad about my life achievements. Because I don't yet have an 'investment handbag'. My stance on 'investment handbags' has always been that if I were going to make a £600 investment, it would probably be in Post Office bonds - and not something that, by and large, lives on the floor in pubs, or which I sometimes use to carry 5lb of potatoes home. If I'm honest, the handbag I would probably like most is a big hollowed-out potato with handles on it. A giant Kind Edward with satchel straps. Then, in times of crisis, I could bake and eat the handbag and survive the winter. That is the way of my people. - Caitlin Moran "How to be a woman"

And so our story begins. One of my friends (yes, I get attached too fast and too soon) has sent me this mail:

One day I was searching for purses and came upon this shop, popularbag. One item in particular (this one) caught my eye because you could see the logo of the designer right on the bag (the logo has since been slightly blurred to be less obvious).

I don't know much about designer purses but a quick Google search of  "Celine handbag" led me to finding this bag, which seems to come in different colors for different seasons.

This, to me, is the source of two issues:

  1.  it's doubtful that this seller (and his "collective" of his wife and sister) handmade hundreds of complicated designs and
  2. copyright infringement hardly seems like something that should be allowed on Etsy.

After reporting the shop and item twice (with links to the Celine handbag site) and not having any action taken on the shop, I emailed Etsy's Integrity Team directly. These are a few lines from the watered down response that I received:
Due to the confidentiality of our flagging process, we cannot comment on the specific shop you linked to in your email. We will take a look at it, and if it does not meet our policies, then we will contact that seller and handle it privately. In the future, if you see a shop that you think may not be following Etsy's policies, the best way to let us know is to use the "Report this shop to Etsy" link on the Shop home page. This puts your report into a queue that is reviewed daily.

 I couldn't resist emailing back:

Thanks for the response. I find the generic nature of it to be slightly discouraging, however, and since the shop that I emailed you about is still up and running, I guess I'll conclude that Etsy now allows sellers of knockoff handbags (that in my opinion aren't likely to be handmade in addition to being blatant stealing of someone else's design) to be within their TOUs. As a seller of entirely handmade items, I find this to be really disheartening.
I also did use the "Report this shop to Etsy" link, twice in fact, in bringing this shop to your attention, using the tag "not handmade," which I believe is appropriate in this case. I've seen many sellers of knockoff handbags on the streets of Manhattan and I don't believe that these people make their bags, either. I assume that all knockoffs are purchased wholesale from a factory somewhere that makes illicit goods.

When the item wasn't removed after the second time that I reported it (with the link included in my email to you) I figured that it must have been missed because I honestly didn't think that Etsy would encourage items of that nature to be sold. I guess I just keep hoping that it's lack of staff that allows stuff like this to take over the site and not a lack of integrity."

At this point I received a generic response nearly identical to the first, but the specific item that I had reported was taken down. However, a week later, it was relisted. I emailed Etsy's Integrity Team again and was basically told to use the flagging system to report items. The shop remains open to this day...

To take counterfeiting seriously, you have to treat it the same way you would stolen property,” said John Gioconda, a lawyer who represents several fancy luxury brands. “If you’re caught purchasing it, you’re punished. It’s the only way to put a real dent in the problem.

Alas, go forth and report! You can use this blogpost. Also, send in your stories!

Diversity

As Etsy grows daily, resellers are thriving. And how sad this may be, sometimes it's also nice to have a little fun with it. One of our friends made this beautiful Treasury:

Diversity - a Treasury

Here is a screenshot, in case you do not wish to open Etsy for boycotting reasons or if you don't want to spend the afternoon crawling your way back out of this reseller maze:

Feel free to use this blogpost to report these shops. And do you have something to report? Let me know via etsyreseller@gmail.com and also add me to your circle! As far as I'm concerned, I am not done raging yet. I have only just begun...
