Shit Resellers Say

Dealing with resellers brings down a whole new level of pain. After being called out (I use a template, since there are so many), resellers either:
  • Delete the listing
  • Get very passive-aggressive
  • Explain in Engrish why it is "handmade"
  • Try to convince me that it's their design & others copied them (my favorite)

Let me walk you through some of the replies I received this morning. First we have Leonato (from the Infinity ring fiasco). I told him that he was selling the exact same ring as 7 other shops, hence it can not be handmade or unique.

Here is his response:

Hello! Thanks for having interest in our items first.
Unfortunately many sellers imitates our items recently but our items are made by ourselves. Also for those items above, it’s a similar items but which is little different. and I want to thank you for letting me know the Alibaba case. The company use our photos and designs without our permission. Thanks and have a good day! Laonato

I know, right? If anyone has a nice reply for Laonato, leave it in the comment box. I'll make sure he gets it.

Next we have Jackie Chen (also sells Infinity rings):

hello, thank you for your message. i have checked all the links you have listed and found that there is one item from our another alibaba stock.
for our silver items, all are make by our skillfull handmade masters and we took pictures by ourself, not buy from other companys.
thank youjackie

I asked him:

Are your "handmade masters" little slave labor children?

To which he responded:

i am not handmade master, i am running the stock, develop new items, make some new designs. my real sister and brother, sister in law and brother in law are all handmade masters, with more than 15years of work experineces.also, we employ handmade masters from outside.i am not a childred, already over 30years old.

Yup. Dealing with resellers is like dealing with toddlers. They know something is wrong, yet refuse to do something about it. They try to justify their actions by pointing fingers. It's like being a parent, telling your kid he can't play with Ricky anymore, because Ricky is a bad influence.

Next up: Girasimo. This reseller sent me a very long message, here is an excerpt:

The fact that the ring sells and a lot of sellers have it doesn't mean i couldn't make it with my own hands. I don't buy from anyone if that's what you mean. I have a small workshop that i create ALL of my jewels.

You could try making it with your own hands, Girasimo...

And here is my favorite (I got many more messages, but it's clogging up my Inbox and we all know what it means when things are clogged up). It's from Anna Luo. It's about the "Fashion Jewelry Colorful Resin Turquoise Bubble Bib Fan Fringe Cabochons Necklace" from an earlier post.

I sent her this:

Hello,
You are selling exactly the same items as these shops:
www.etsy.com/listing/130295281/free-shipping-fashion-jewelry-colorful
www.etsy.com/listing/151836486/fringe-statement-necklace-designer
www.etsy.com/listing/153911192/fan-necklace-fan-fringe-necklace-high
www.etsy.com/listing/153600503/fan-fringe-necklace-fan-necklace-fringe
www.etsy.com/listing/153901492/resin-shell-bubble-necklace-statement

Might want to check up on that, I think you all have the same supplier :)
Keep up the "handmade" work!
Love

To which she responded:

About a branch & a bird...

True handmade items are a pleasure for the eyes (well, not always; Aunt Clara and her horrible glue gun crafts come to mind), IF they are truly handmade.

To quote Helen Killer: "Sometimes 'handmade' means made by many tiny hands in third world countries".

To be honest, I was a little surprised. Sure, I make jewelry myself, so I have seen the supplies to make this particular necklace. I wouldn't buy them, since I am not a fan of this style. But I thought maybe some of the jewelry artists would.

I guess I am still a little too optimistic. I am optimistic as an idiot.

Of course you wouldn't take the time to actually make this necklace, if you can just buy them in bulk from Alibaba.

Get ready to hurl...

Today we present the following "handmade" shops:

Needless to say, above shops are just what was spat out by Etsy's first search page result. My stomach couldn't bare page 2.

Now on to the fun part. The "unique" items:

There ya go. I showed you just 5. There are 760 listings of this necklace.
Crying is allowed, so go ahead. Oh wait, I almost forget the best part:

You're welcome.

Not remotely handmade. Or vintage.

Exactly. Another Etsy seller is fed up. With good reason.
As resellers flourish, seller morale drops.

I do believe Etsy has reached an ultimate low.
That being said, I think there are several ways Etsy can turn their venue around.

My first suggestion would be to personally check each shop BEFORE opening. Which would save a lot of time and frustrations, trying the weed out the enormous amount of resellers already residing on Etsy.

Anyway, back to our Etsy seller. She sells wonderful items, but they are being pushed back to page 15 immediately after publishing. Why? Are her tags not good? Maybe it's her title?

No. Nope. It's another problem.

Resellers!

This time, there is a new trend in handmade jewelry. Or should I say "vintage handmade beautiful gold free shipping retro gold lion modern necklace"?

That's right. Lion necklaces. Anyone interested?

Here are the shops where you can buy with confidence, it's "unique"!

Now, I am not going to blow smoke up resellers asses by giving them free traffic. I am going to post screen shots of the cheap junk they are selling. Here we go!

I am going to close this thread now and remember; DON'T CALL OUT!

UPDATE: Reseller Rachel from the shop "jewelry4fab" has let me know that she has deactivated her listing!

Right now

Okay, let's just do this right now. Word needs to be spread about this.

I received a message from another Etsy seller who is also very frustrated that we are now almost 15 8 years into Etsy and nothing has been done so far to keep the resellers out. Etsy has been promising us time & time again things will change, but they don't.

Things just get worse.

Here are some lovely examples I received today.

Anyone interested in some handmade necklaces? Well, these are all "unique" & "handmade"!

We have the following shops:

And I bet my sweet ass you already know what all these shops have in common? Exactly.

RESELLERS!

But how do you know? Well, they ALL sell the same necklace. I know, right.

"They've handmade it with love and care", which is Chinese slang for: buy on AliBaba, put on Etsy and don't give a shit.

Some more screencaps, since it is so much fun!

Apparantly all you need these days to make a quick buck is a Creditcard & some Photoshop skills. And while you are at it, here is the link to the Alibaba necklace, just in case you need some extra cash:

Oh & a quick word of advice to the Etsy resellers: rename your item, if you are stupid enough to resell something which is probably produced by a large slave labor factory.

Succes!

Great success: we already got some new input from fellow Etsy sellers on resellers (with sources!) We will publish them tonight, so stay tuned!

The New Etsy Reseller Blog!

After seeing yet ANOTHER reseller pop up on Etsy with 602 bracelets priced at $3 each, I had enough. I have been an avid reader of the Regretsy blog for years, but unfortunatly it is no longer active.

While Googling for a place where I could call out the resellers I have found (since Etsy isn't doing ANYTHING about it & has some vague statements about "collectives"), I did indeed found some blogs, but they are all no longer active.

So here it is! The New Etsy Reseller Call Out blog! Please feel free to send me everything you have found about resellers, pictures, names, shops, products, I want everything.

So, here is the one that drove me over the edge. A stack of bracelets in different colors. The first shop is called "dailyideas" (which means they just steal shit & mark it as being handmade):

Aweeee, isn't that cute? Then I copied the image link of one item and went to Google. Clicked "Images" on top. Clicked the little camera in the searchbox. Pasted in the URL of the item. Hit search and tada: mass produced junk.

Because another shop on Etsy is selling the EXACT same shit. Here it is:

And yes; I have reported both & sent them both a message:

Hello,
You are selling exactly the same items as this shop:

[Etsy shop URL]

Might want to check up on that, I think you both have the same supplier :)
Keep up the "handmade" work!

Love

Not that it will matter, but hey! One can always dream!

PS: not kidding, send me everything you've got!
